Abstract
Purpose: This study was done to explore and understand the disease management experiences in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).

The data were collected through in-depth individual interviews. Data were analyzed using constants comparative method with theoretical saturation.

Results: A core category emerged as ¡®searching for my own key'. The processes of disease management experience of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who were receiving TACE were manifested in four stages: awareness, acceptance, adjustment, settlement. Central phenomenon was ¡®living life treading on a tightrope¡¯ Strategies including ¡®searching¡¯, ¡®matching¡¯, ¡®expressing own mind', ¡®strategic coping¡¯, ¡®comparing¡¯, and ¡®converting¡¯. Consequences were 'finding out the key to life' and 'living with a bent key'.

Conclusion: This finding of the study provided a new perspective that patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who were receiving TACE would be to maintain their social status, their roles, manage their disease and life style, but not just depending onto the health management specialists dynamically.
